In 2010, the government of Nova Scotia set a target requiring that at least 25% of the province’s energy comes from renewables by 2015, and 40% by 2020. Utilizing clean energy sources will lower the need for imported fossil fuels, lower greenhouse gas emissions, and ultimately help to reduce the effects of climate change. To reach this target, Nova Scotia will need to develop and build systems that can extract and distribute clean renewable energy from local sources such as tidal, wind, hydro, biomass, and others. Digby County is in a unique position to contribute to this process, with direct access to huge sources of clean energy, most notably tidal from the Bay of Fundy. And because Digby is a coastal region with close economic and cultural ties to the land, The Municipality is always looking for ways to reduce the area's carbon footprint and help combat the negative effects of a changing climate that the region is so vulnerable to.
